Argyle Winery is run by Bryon Croser, the famed Australian winemaker who is more well-known for those products sold under the name of the Petaluma Winery. Croser's first Oregon vintage was 1987, and he has fashioned the finest sparkling wines I have yet to taste from Oregon. Additionally, there is a super, bone dry Riesling that could give some of the top Alsatian winemakers competition. The 1988 Dry Riesling-Reserve exhibited an intense bouquet of peaches, apricots, and flowers that was followed by a full-bodied, concentrated, bone dry Riesling with some evidence of botrytis, a gorgeous texture, and crisp, wonderfully pure, austere flavors. This top-notch dry Riesling may be the best I have ever tasted from America. Given its structure and size, it should drink well for another 3-4 years.
