The 2011 Matarromera Pago de las Solanas is the estate’s top wine, from vines planted in 1958, cropped at 1,500 kilogram per hectare and aged in French oak for 21 months. The bouquet is very attractive, neatly embracing the new oak and allowing the fruit to complement the wood: blackberry, orange blossom, a touch of lavender and dark plum. The palate is full-bodied with highly extracted sweet tannins that lacquer the mouth: with macerated black cherries, creme de cassis, blueberry jam and a touch of spice. It is a bit of a blockbuster and yet it does retain control and focus, the finish well-balanced and fresh with copious ripe small dark berries lingering in the mouth. Expensive, but it is very good. Drink 2014-2025.
