Pouring from the bottle with a very faint pink or copper color, the Cantarutti 2019 Friuli Colli Orientali Pinot Grigio is fresh, zesty and light on its feet. This is your classic Italian Grigio, fermented and aged in steel vat, to pair with an easy grilled fish fillet with lemon wedges. This wine offers aromas of green apple, pear and a touch of bitter almond. The six-hectare vineyard site has local Ponca soils (or clay and sandstone). About 18,000 bottles were produced.

The 2013 Friuli Colli Orientali Pinot Grigio is a fleshy but streamlined expression of one of Italy's most versatile grapes. The bouquet shows heavy tones of candied fruit and caramel with some lighter tones of citrus and peach at the back. Those fruit flavors are emboldened by distant touches of sulfur or volcanic stone. Cantarutti's Pinot Grigio offers much more structure and thickness than you normally get with this grape.

Executed in a ramato style (in which the wine keeps longer contact with the skins to obtain a pink-copperish color), this is a well-balanced Pinot Grigio with pretty aromas of fruits and flowers and a smooth, creamy finish.——M.L.(8/1/2009)—— 87
