From an historic vineyard in Serralunga which, regrettably, was no longer making interesting wine, this 1999 Barolo suggests that things are now on the move. A fresh garnet, its expansive nose exhales aromas of wild cherries, dried roses, anise, and cinnamon, while the dense palate, very concentrated and intense in its flavors, is still tightly wound, backward, and in need of much time. I am probably being too conservative, as Serralunga Barolo repays time and patience, but there are plenty of good wines in the pipeline here which are already more approachable, in particular the 2000 Barolo and a very fine 2000 Barbera d’Alba.
