The 2011 Chakana Estate Selection Blend consists of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Malbec and 20% Syrah and is aged for 12 months in French oak (30% new). It offers a smooth, seductive bouquet of macerated dark cherries, strawberry, iodine and black currant pastilles that is succinctly defined and perfumed. The palate is medium-bodied with a lovely, ripe, rounded entry that belies the structure underneath that never imposes upon its caressing, focused finish, which offers magnificent minerality and tension. The 2006 Chakana Estate Selection is composed of 80% Malbec, 10% Syrah, and 10% Petit Verdot aged in barrique for 15 months. The nose exhibits elements of pain grille, pencil lead, black cherry, black berry, and plum. Firm on the palate, it has ample ripe fruit, a forward personality, and several years of aging potential. Drink this outstanding effort through 2018. Chakana, a family owned winery, was founded in 2002 and the first vintage was 2003. Currently, 50,000 cases are produced, 98% of that exported.
