A J. F. Lurton family property, Chateau des Erles is turning out at their top end (albeit at relatively hefty prices for these appellations) impressive wines from old Grenache and Carignan with Syrah. Their 2004 Corbieres La Recaoufa delivers scents and flavors of blackberry jam, blond tobacco, beef jerky, and pungent crushed stone. With admirable clarity and sappy concentration it delivers a finish of unusual – indeed in my experience virtually unprecedented – refinement and elegance for the appellation. Lacking experience in the aging of these wines I am reluctant to prognosticate. Imported by Ex Cellars Wine Agencies, Cambridge, MA; tel. (617) 876-5105
