This is the top wine of Montepulciano’s big cooperative winery, named after 17th century poet Francesco Redi, who called Vino Nobile “the king of wines.” Giacomo Tachis, the dean of Italy’s oenologists and the creator of Tignanello, Sassicaia, and Solaia, makes the wines and the 2000 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is a solid ruby/garnet with a sweet plum and tobacco nose with supplementary notes of leather and smoke. Well constructed, with good concentration and depth, much fruit, and supple, quality tannins, it will provide good drinking from 2004-2010.
