The botrytized 2015 Orvieto Classico Muffa Nobile Pourriture Noble (500 milliliters) is a beautiful wine that represents one of the very few spots in Italy where Muffa Nobile, or so-called Noble Rot, occurs naturally on a consistent basis. Vineyards benefit from low-hanging fog that hovers over a lake not too far from the hilltop town of Orvieto in southern Umbria. The wine represents a field blend of 55% Grechetto, 35% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Semillon and 5% Procanico. Fruit in 2015 was harvested on September 22 and 24, and the resulting wine has noticeable acidity and residual sugar. Aromas include dried apricot, peach and honey. The ancient Italian name for Noble Rot (before farmers really knew what they were dealing with) was Pourriture Noble.
