Using a different clone of Primitivo than is used in the "Old Vines," the 2013 Primitivo La Signora is a slightly more feminine and subdued expression of the variety. If "Old Vines" is this masculine side of the grape, La Signora is his bride. Delicate notes of rosewood and spice are gracefully contrasted against dark cherry and dried blackberry. The wine hits the palate with intensity and a deep sense of inner energy (despite the 15% alcohol). This is a stunning and very special Primitivo.

The 2010 Primitivo La Signora comes from 60-year-old, bush-trained vines but represents a different clone of Primitivo than used in the "Old Vines" wine. You get similar floral intensity here with whiffs of dried violets and rose potpourri. This wine is hot and jammy in character with aromas of dark earth, stewed fruit, prune, dried plum and raisin. Those bold fruit tones are backed by leather and tobacco. La Signora is true to form: It offers a super-ripe, slightly sweet interpretation that is in line with Puglian tradition.
