Already bottled, the 2017 Savigny-lès-Beaune Village offers up expressive aromas of raspberries, orange rind and dried flowers, followed by a medium-bodied, supple wine with a succulent core of sappy fruit, framed by melting tannins. Fran?ois de Nicolay opted for a shorter than usual élevage because the wine went through its malolactic fermentation early and clarified rapidly.

The 2015 Savigny-lès-Beaune Village continues to go from strength to strength, and this bottle was even more satiny and seductive than the last bottle I drank, some six months earlier. Wafting from the glass with a fragrant bouquet of raspberries, red cherries, rose petals and incipient hints of mossy soil, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and expansive, with melting tannins, a tangy core of fruit and a long, beautifully delineated finish. With time in bottle, this wine's vibrant energy is becoming just as apparent as its ripe fruit.

From mainly clay soils, the 2014 Savigny les Beaune Villages has an attractive strawberry shortcake nose, hints of ripe cherry - simple but effective. The palate is medium-bodied with steely tannin, taut and linear with a little hardness to address before bottling. But it should turn out to be a fresh, citrus-driven Savigny to enjoy over 3-5 years.

The 2011 Savigny-les-Beaune Villages, which comes from 1.07 hectares of vines in Aux Fourneaux and Les Saucours, has plenty of sumptuous raspberry and wild strawberry fruit on the nose that just aims to please. The palate has a sweet, candied entry with fleshy and simple red fruit, although I feel that it falls away too early on the finish. Not bad, but could be better. Drink now-2016. The wines from Domaine Chandon de Briailles have not been reviewed in this publication for (what appears to be) a number of years.
