The 100% barrique-aged 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Noble Revelation is made in a modern style, but it still possesses the roasted Provencal herb, garrigue, kirsch liqueur, and black raspberry characteristics of a classic Chateauneuf du Pape. The 2003s seem to have lost a great deal of fruit, texture, and depth, and they are much more evolved than I thought last year. Although outstanding, the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Noble Revelation is eclipsed by the spectacular 2000. A deep ruby/purple-tinged wine with notes of barrique that are better integrated than in 2004, it offers impressively ripe fruit, hints of melted licorice, smoky Provencal herbs, black raspberries and blackberries, and a full-bodied, lush texture. The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Noble Revelation was, in fact, a revelation. A dense purple-colored wine, it possesses terrific, pure black cherry and creme de cassis fruit with hints of graphite, smoke, and vanilla in the background. Full-bodied, with magnificent power, purity, and glycerin, this Chateauneuf cuts a broad swath across the palate with no hard edges. Nevertheless, there is plenty of tannin lurking underneath the huge, viscous texture. This deep wine displays tremendous potential. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2016.
