The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Eternelle is pure Grenache from the sandy-safre soils of La Gardiole, vinified and matured exclusively in stainless steel. As befits an all-Grenache cuvée, it's perfumed and rose-like on the nose, with delicate tea-like notes accenting black cherry fruit. There's lots of spice on the full-bodied palate, a sexy, silky mouthfeel and a long, complex finish that ends with a hint of licorice. I was blown away by all of this estate's 2016s.

The smallest of the cuvées produced by Domaine des 3 Cellier, the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Eternelle is very good but disappointing in the context of the rest of the lineup. Pure Grenache from the sandy-safre soils of La Garidole and vinified and matured exclusively in stainless steel, the wine nevertheless didn't pop the way it should. Cherry, clove and allspice aromas display ample intensity and complexity, and on the palate the wine is creamy and supple. Unfortunately, it falls off rapidly on the finish and lacks the energy and freshness of the domaine's top efforts.

The 100% Grenache 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Eternelle was the star of the show. Coming all from the Gardiole lieu-dit and aged all in stainless steel, it has a downright sexy feel in its kirsch, blackberry, garrigue and dusty soils aromatics, medium to full-bodied richness and perfumed style. There were a scant 900 bottles made, but it’s superb.

Slightly lighter in color than the Privilege, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Eternelle is the richest, most concentrated and multidimensional of these four cuvees. Impressively endowed with abundant notes of Provencal herbs, and black and red fruits mixed with hints of licorice and loamy soil, it should drink well for a decade (an atypically long time for a 2011). (Not yet released) Domaine des 3 Cellier represents one-half of the residue of what was previously reviewed under the name Domaine Saint-Benoit. The three Cellier brothers, Ludovic, Julien and Benoit, are the eighth generation of a family of wine growers in Chateauneuf du Pape. They own nearly 35 acres of vines spread throughout 24 different plots, and the wines they have been producing recently are better than what was achieved under the Domaine Saint-Benoit label. The 2011s are close in quality to the estate’s 2010s, with perhaps the advantage of being slightly more open-knit, forward and precocious. The 2010s are made from similar blends.
