The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "Cuvée Jules" is a blend of one barrel each of Chatelot, Chabiots and Sentiers. It offers a sultry bouquet with brambly red fruit, sous-bois and light tobacco aromas that unfold in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, vibrant orange rind infused red berry fruit, nicely focused with well-integrated new oak (30%) towards the finish.

The 2013 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cuvée Jules, named after Virgile’s oldest son, is sourced from plots in Chatelot, Chaviot and Les Sentiers (around one barrel from each). It has quite a rich and generous bouquet with macerated black cherries, violets, blood orange and mineral deposits. This is forward and expressive. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry. This is nicely focused, but much more backward here than the nose suggests, dealing a firm grip on the finish, though bridled with a long, stony, lightly spiced aftertaste. Very fine.

The 2010 Chambolle-Musigny Cuvee Jules is gorgeous for its fleshiness and open, accessible personality. Freshly cut flowers, sweet red berries and spices are woven together nicely in this supple, easygoing Chambolle. The Cuvee Jules is made from parcels in Feusselottes and Sentiers. Anticipated maturity: 2014- 2025. Virgile Lignier began his harvest on September 24. Potential alcohols came in between 11.8 and 14%. The wines under 12.5% were lightly chaptalized by about a half degree. I tasted all of the 2010s from tank, where they were resting in anticipation of bottling, which was scheduled to start this January. Virgile Lignier told me he was quite surprised by the quality of the 2010s, especially the ripeness of the tannins.
