One of the finest Mercureys I have ever tasted is Launay's 1990 Mercurey-Clos du Chateau Montaigu. Aromas of roasted nuts, black-cherries, herbs, and spices explode from the glass. Rich and full-bodied, with superb concentration yet a considerable level of tannin, this massive Mercurey possesses the wealth of fruit necessary to balance out the tannin. I would recommend cellaring it for 3-4 years; it should last for up to 15. Proprietor Yves de Launay continues to fashion classic, long-lived wines from his well-situated vineyards in Mercurey.
