Notes of cherries, berries, smoked meats and rich soil tones preface Juillot's 2018 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos Tonnerre, a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy wine that's charming and flavorful, with powdery tannins and a sapid finish. It's another fine success from Juillot.

Aromas of smoky strawberries, licorice and rich soil tones introduce the 2017 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos Tonnerre, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy wine with good concentration, a rich core of fruit and powdery structuring tannins. This is an old-vine cuvée that's performing especially well this year.

The 2016 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos Tonnerre exhibits notes of rose petal, cherries, licorice and cardamom. On the palate, it's velvety and elegant, its melting tannins hidden in a juicy core of fruit. As usual, it's the most immediately pretty and accessible of Juillot's premiers crus.

The 2015 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos Tonnerre is delicious, offering up a red-fruited bouquet of ripe cherries, pomegranate, grilled meat and espresso roast. On the palate, the wine is supple, texturally generous and medium-bodied, its chalky, chewy tannins concealed behind a succulent core of fruit. This is a very pretty Mercurey which should drink well for the better part of a decade.
