Illustrating Frederic Blanc’s intention to harvest earlier and capture a different style of Gewurztraminer, his 2007 Gewurztraminer Furstentum – which will probably not be released until 2012 – harbors single-digit residual sugar. Celery root, mint, brown spices, and black pepper dominate the nose and palate, where a price for the low residual sugar is unfortunately paid in a faint bit of heat. That said, a bit of warmth fits the rather aggressive personality of this wine that finishes with real tactile grip. This should be fascinating to follow at table – probably for more than a decade – but under the circumstances if makes most sense to plan on re-tasting it when it is finally released. It could also be that the effects of hail will come back to haunt it, and if I were Blancks, I would want to release it early. Frederic and Philippe Blanck are among the wine world’s – hardly just Alsace’s or France’s – truly late-releasers, and Philippe opines that their 2007s – which he compares with the 2001s – will need especially long to show their best. That noted, I found the wines highly expressive at age one year, and the domaine did a more than credible job of 2006, too. Perhaps a bit paradoxically in light of their pleas for cellar maturation, the Blancks are moving increasingly toward the use of screwcap closure, and Philippe Blanck says that when he goes back and tastes the first wines he bottled this way – from vintages 2001 and 2002 – he is delighted with their evolution, or perhaps, in fact, their freshness and relative lack of evolution. (For an isolated comparison under cork and screwcap, see my tasting note on the Blancks’ 2006 Schlossberg Riesling.) This is one of several addresses where a tendency to revert to drier bottlings can be observed, for more about which consult my tasting notes on the Blancks’ 2007 Pinot Gris and on their 2006 and 2007 Gewurztraminer crus. Note that I was not able to taste the entire Blanck line-up from either of the vintages under consideration. The Blanck 2006 Gewurztraminer Furstentum is unabashedly sweet (at 40 grams of residual sugar) but this is not entirely unsupportive of its lush texture and dominant aromas and flavors of mint, lily, litchi, honey, and caramelized peach. At the same time, this offers marine mineral nuances that add interest to its long sweet finish. This might well prove to be a good keeper, and certainly it would be nice to be able to five it 6-8 years or more and have some of its sense of sweetness subside. But I would monitor the wine on release to get further inklings of how well it might hold up.
