Opening in the glass with dramatic aromas of pear, white flowers, clear honey and toasted bread, the 2019 Montrachet Grand Cru is full-bodied, rich and enveloping, with lively balancing acids and a deep and complete profile, concluding with a long, lavish finish. It's produced from must purchased from Baron Thénard—whose large holdings lie on the Chassagne side.

Produced from purchased grapes, the 2018 Montrachet Grand Cru was showing brilliantly, soaring from the glass with aromas of vine blossom, pear, golden orchard fruit and warm bread. Full-bodied, multidimensional and layered, it's concentrated and complete, with a sumptuous core of concentrated fruit and a precise, elegantly fragrant finish.

The 2016 Montrachet Grand Cru comes from purchased fruit that was cropped at eight hectoliters per hectare and filled two barrels, one new and the other one year old. It has a clean and fresh bouquet, quite conservative, maybe missing the bravura of the Chevalier or the class of the Batard. The palate is fresh and quite intense on the entry with spicy citrus fruit laced with orang zest, even a tang of marmalade. This becomes more complex as it goes on, and certainly the aftertaste feels very long, the mouth tingling 60 seconds after it has departed. This is a very fine white Burgundy rather than a superlative Montrachet at this early juncture.

The 2015 Montrachet Grand Cru, which comes from purchased fruit from the Chassagne side, was taken from barrel since it underwent a very slow malolactic fermentation according to winemaker Ben?ot Riffault. To be honest, it has a hard time following the Chevalier Montrachet, not nearly as expressive and without the mineralité shown by the vines located further up in the incline. The palate is actually more expressive with very fine tension, quite intense with palpable salinity, with a sense of energy. There is genuine weight and presence on the finish here and the aftertaste is very long, yet the action seems to reside with the Chevalier-Montrachet this season.
