The 2006 Varietals Seleccion is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Tempranillo aged in oak for 18 months. Purple-colored, it exhibits an alluring nose of cedar, tobacco, underbrush, violets, blueberry, and blackberry. Full-bodied and mouth-filling, it is nicely balanced and pleasure-bent, lacking only complexity. That could emerge with another 1-2 years of bottle age. The 2003 Finca la Estacada Seleccion Varietal is a blend of 45% Tempranillo, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 10% Syrah, and 5% Mazuelo aged for 18 months in French and American oak. Purple-colored, it presents an intriguing array of damp earth, soy, spice box, leather, red currant and blackberry aromas. With a rustic personality (perhaps due to the hot vintage), the wine offers ripe but chunky fruit, moderate tannin, and a slightly compact finish. The 2001 Finca La Estacada Seleccion Varietal, a blend of 45% Tempranillo, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 15% Syrah, and 5% Manzuelo, is a real steal. A modern-styled, beautifully made effort aged 18 months in French and American oak, it exhibits a deep ruby/purple color along with a rich bouquet of red and black fruits intertwined with licorice and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, with loads of fruit, a supple texture, and a long finish, this elegant 2001 will drink well for 5-6 years.
