Bottled five days before I tasted it, the 2021 Berg Schlossberg offers a very clear, pure, fresh and stony bouquet with leafy and lemony notes on the nose. Elegant, fresh and juicy but also pure and tensioned on the palate, this is an ascetic but dense and intense, very sustainable and tensioned Berg Schlossberg with fine tannins and a long, intense, grippy and bone-dry finish that reveals lemony notes again and those of crushed slate and quartzite. A classic and not from this era but pre-global warming. 11.62 % alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in July 2022.

The 2020 Berg Schlossberg offers an intense and earthy bouquet with wet clayish slate and lemony as well as flinty aromas. Lush and elegant on the palate, this is a powerful, quite rich and mouth-filling Berg Schlossberg with grippy tannins, fine bitters and a long, intense and salty, very complex finish. More powerful than the 2021 and, in all its generosity and tension, a safe bet for the future. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in July 2022.

On the full-bodied side, but the combined weight of sugar and alcohol is ably balanced by bountiful acids. Floral notes lead off the nose, followed by hints of pineapple and spice, then dried apricots and candied fruit kick in on the palate. Thick and oily, showing impressive levels of sugar. Starts with honeyed peaches, then shows off marmalade and dried fruit notes on the palate.
