The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve was aged for 13 months in a combination of 19% new American and 23% new French oak (the rest used). Sourced from Seneca Lake (60%) and Cayuga Lake (40%), it comes in at 13.2% alcohol. There isn't a lot of Cabernet character in evidence here, but the fine structure makes it pointed and focused, with grip on the finish. This may yet have the ability to improve in the cellar--I suspect it will--but let's be a little conservative just now. Its structure will certainly give it a chance to develop. It is a nicely done entrant in this difficult FLX category.

With its integrated nose of violet, spice and berry, and its balanced flavors of pepper, mocha and coffee, this wine has an ageable appeal. It’s a touch dry, but the tannins are sturdy, the finish long and the overall package impressive. Pair with venison, veal or even cioppino for added value.——S.K.(10/1/2008)—— 85
