The 2019 Bolgheri Superiore Atis is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Rebo and 5% Cabernet Franc. If you're wondering what Rebo is, it's a cross between Merlot and Teroldego. As with all the wines from Guado al Melo, there is a bit of mad science here, but that's what makes them so much fun. From one of Tuscany's most avant-garde and experimental wineries, the Atis opens to soft notes of dark fruit and blackberry pie with a toasted crust. There is a green or spicy note with grilled rosemary. Aged in neutral oak for 24 months, there is roughness to the tannins that should flesh out with another year or two of bottle age. Production is 8,500 bottles.

Made with 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2017 Bolgheri Superiore Atis somehow still showcases the textural softness and black cherry aromas mostly associated with Merlot. This is a full-bodied wine with a rich and generous bouquet shaped by the hot sunshine and the soaring temperatures of the vintage. The bouquet reveals the sort of blackberry preserves, syrupy crème de cassis, spice, cedar and smoked mahogany or mesquite that you'd want to saddle up with a grilled steak. To the palate, the wine delivers firmness and a touch of sour fruit. About 8,000 bottles were released.

The 2015 Bolgheri Superiore Atis is bright and intense but not quite as attractive as the lower-priced Bolgheri Rosso Rute (which is also an 80/20 bend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot). There are nice notes of cherry and raspberry fruit, but the more evident volatile acidity on the tip of the tongue keeps it from scoring higher. Some 15,000 bottles were made.
