The 2007 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva Zanna is a selection from some of the estate's oldest vineyards that spends two years in oak. The 2007 reveals gorgeous detail and nuance along with the Illuminati's signature textured expression of fruit. Hints of tar, smoke and licorice add complexity as the fruit wraps around the palate on the long finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. The 2005 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva Zanna is a joy to taste. This plump, juicy red possesses tons of generous fruit in a soft-textured expression of Montepulciano. Subtle notes of leather, flowers, tobacco and earthiness develop in the glass, adding further complexity. Today, this harmonious wine comes across as quite primary and in need of another year or two in bottle, but it is incredibly delicious even at this stage. The Zanna spent two years in casks and smaller French oak barrels. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.
