Leighton's sweet wine, Cuvee d'Or, has always been delicious, but he has engineered a major breakthrough with the 1990 Cuvee d'Or. Made from 80% Semillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc (the same percentage as used at Chateau d'Yquem), this wine exhibits a sensational fragrance of honeyed tropical fruits, flowers, and spicy, toasty oak. The bouquet clearly could be mistaken for a great vintage of Chateau Coutet's Cuvee Madame. In the mouth, the breathtakingly rich, well-delineated, botrytised flavors offer lavish, even unctuous richness buttressed by crisp, zesty acidity. Light gold in color, it will be fascinating to follow the development of this wine - the finest young sweet wine I have ever tasted from California. It would be virtually impossible to pick out in a tasting of top Barsacs and Sauternes. It is scheduled to be released in the fall of 1992.
