It would seem illogical that a full-time microbiologist, who is working part-time out of a warehouse in Novato, produces some of California's most profound and long-lived wines. Kalin's two Pinot Noir offerings are among the most distinctive and original expressions of American made Pinot Noir I have tasted. Although the 1989 Pinot Noir from Sonoma is light by this producer's standard, it reveals attractive, meaty, berry flavors, a wonderful spicy earthiness, and excellent freshness and length. It is not likely to be as long-lived as the 1988 and 1987 Cuvee DD's, but it will last for 5-6 years. Although it is sold out, readers may come across a bottle at selected restaurants or retailers.
