The 2007 Dyo Elies is a blend of Syrah (60%), Merlot (30%) and Xinomavro (10%), aged for 14 months in a mixture of French and American oak. Very Northern Rhone-ish, this has quite an elegant mid-palate, a serious tannic backbone and a sharp, bright feel to it. Alternately gamey and sweet, the sweet notes popping up from the oak, the game consistently cutting through it, this overall has an elegant feel to it in the mid-palate, but intensity of flavor and some hard, drying tannins on the finish. There is not much mid-palate concentration, but it has some charm - at least when the tannins moderate. Drink now-2020. The 2005 DYO Elies (meaning two olives) is the most seductive and full bodied wine in this group from this winery. This is a blend of Syrah (60%), Merlot (30%) and Xinomavro. Although its texture is velvety at first and the fruit is flavorful, it is no slouch in the structure department. There is a bit of a rustic edge, particularly early on, bursts of tannin. It has a touch of funk on the nose and a little of that Syrah earthiness on the palate. A smokey nuance popped up, too. Nonetheless, this is the wine in this group that holds the most potential for an upgrade in score if it performs well in the cellar. It certainly has some things to prove. It will probably not start to show its best until around 2010-2011. There were 3,000 cases produced. Drink 2009-2017. Kir-Yianni was created in 1997, intended to be a premium winery for Boutari, one of Greece’s landmark wine companies. It was named for Boutari’s founder, helped develop its local appellation (Naoussa) and became identified with the Xinomavro grape, one of Greece’s popular native grapes.Importer: VOS Selections, New York, N.Y.; tel: (212) 967-6948
