The 2001 Moscadello di Montalcino is one of Italy’s outstanding dessert wines: golden yellow, its complex musky, and herbaceous nose of apricots, candied lemons, and lavender gives way to a viscous and unctuous palate of dried apricot and peach fruit, musk, and herbs with an underlying freshness which keeps the sweetness from getting out of hand. Drink: 2003-2008. High level winemaking here.
This small Montalcino property is part of a large Italian insurance company, with the largest part of the wine operation being the Fattoria del Cerro in Montepulciano. The vineyards, well located near Castelnuovo dell’Abate, produced good wines for a decade, but in 1997, largely due to the exceptional work of winemaker Lorenzo Landi, quality took a startling leap.
