Blended of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Shiraz, 13% Petit Verdot and 8% Merlot, the medium deep garnet-purple colored 2011 Cabernets presents a fragrant nose of red cherries, red currants, blackberries and mulberries with hints of lilacs, spice box, cedar and soy. Medium-bodied and tightly knit in the mouth, the vibrant, youthful palate is filled with red fruits and exotic spices supported by a medium level of very finely-grained tannins and lively acid before finishing with great persistence. Drink it 2014 to 2023+. Lake’s Folly does not have a US importer.

The 2007 Cabernets is blended of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Petit Verdot and 15% Merlot. It begins with a deep garnet-purple color and slightly muted nose revealing moderately intense aromas of espresso, blackberry, dried plums, forest floor and loam. A nice backbone of high acidity and a medium level of very fine tannins give great structure fleshed out by an ample amount of restrained fruit. Long finish. Wonderfully approachable now but the restrained nature promises more with age. The medium body and modest alcohol render this a superb food wine, though it’s pretty great on its own! Drink now to 2020. This iconic anomaly of the Hunter Valley is famous not just for its visionary founder Dr. Max Lake going out on a limb and planting Bordeaux varieties and Chardonnay in this Shiraz and Semillon region, but also for its high quality achievable in compatible vintages, not to mention remarkable ageability. Since 2000 the winery has been in the hands of Peter Fogarty who established Millbrook in the Perth Hills, a groundbreaking winery in its own right.
