From a cooler vintage, the 2014 Ca' Carnocchio is slightly less concentrated in terms of mouthfeel and runs just a moderate length. This is a more subtle and downplayed presentation of a 90% Corvina and Corvinone blend with 10% Croatina, Rondinella and Oseleta. Aged in barrique for 18 months, the bouquet brings out blackberry preserves, exotic spice, moist chewing tobacco and campfire ash. The Ca' Carnocchio is made with dried grapes that see three months of appassimento. It could pair well with a lighter meat dish, even a breaded veal steak. There were 12,000 bottles made.

An IGT blend of traditional Valpolicella grapes (Corvina, Corvinone, Oseleta and Rondinella), the 2010 Ca’ Carnocchio bursts from the glass with exciting momentum. Grapes see a brief appassimento and 20 months of barrique. Bright cherry segues to spice, resin, tar and smoked cedar. The wine’s steady momentum is impressive: It hits the palate with soft, caressing velvetiness. Drink 2015-2025. Franco Scamperle’s Amarone Pergole Vece is one of the best Valpolicella wines on the market today. Only made in the best vintages from old vines, it sees a longer appassimento and oak regime to increase the wine’s distinctive intensity. Pergole Vece ranks high on my list of personal favorites, but unfortunately I have seen the wine’s retail price creep up suddenly the past few years. Importer: Vias Imports, www.viaswine.com

The 2007 Ca- Carnocchio fleshes out beautifully, with expressive dark fruit, orange peel, leather and exotic spices. Rich, round and generous, the Ca- Carnocchio is an immediate, sexy wine best enjoyed over the next handful of years. The 2007 isn't as exuberant as it is in top vintages, but this is nevertheless a very strong effort. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016. The 2006 Ca’ Carnocchio is a gorgeous wine. Layers of sensual dark fruit, mocha, spices, leather and licorice emerge from this rich, textured offering. Soft and enveloping through to the finish, the 2006 Ca’ Carnocchio delivers tons of pleasure in an up-front, juicy style. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016.
