Here is a beautifully fragrant and delicate red to pair with roasted veal or chicken. The Luigi Pira 2019 Langhe Nebbiolo is highly redolent of strawberry, cassis and sweet raspberry. The wine shows a light and lifted side of Nebbiolo with great latitude. That fresh acidity will keep a hungry palate ready for the next serving of pork roast.

Gianpaolo Pira runs the Luigi Pira winery today. His 2018 Langhe Nebbiolo (with 6,000 bottles made) shows some ripeness with cherry skin, wild berry, pressed rose and some iron-rich soil. These results are simple and sharp, rendering an authentic and naked expression of the Nebbiolo grape.

The 2016 Langhe Nebbiolo is a lean and tapered expression of this important Piedmont red grape. Looks are deceiving, as the wine charges forth with a beautifully polished and concise succession of aromas. You get wild berry, cassis and a touch of sweet cherry marmalade. Lingering tones of smoke and powdered licorice add to the cheerful intensity of the bouquet.

There is nice energy here with candied cherry and dark spice, along with cough drop and crème de cassis. The 2013 Langhe Nebbiolo delivers sharp and lean directness.

The 2009 Langhe Nebbiolo makes for a great introduction to the house style. Classic Nebbiolo aromas waft from the glass. Dark red cherries, crushed flowers, licorice and mint are given an extra shade of dimension in this fabulous, textured Nebbiolo. A rich, totally seductive finish makes it hard to resist a second taste. This is easily the equal of many a Barolo or Barbaresco. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. This is a head-spinning set of wines from Luigi Pira from top to bottom. I would be thrilled to drink any of these wines any day of the week.
