With much of the fruit coming from the Airstrip Block and matured in 25-30% new oak, the 2008 Shiraz has a medium-deep garnet-purple color. On the nose there’s an alluring perfume of dark cherries and warm raspberries with nuances of roses, anise, damp earth and tar. A medium level of very fine grained tannins and crisp acidity structure the very fresh, vibrant fruit on this full-bodied wine. Finishing long, this wine is currently approachable yet should keep to 2016+. Located in the heart of the Nagambie Lakes region (very close to Tahbilk), Mitchelton is now under the umbrella of the Lion Nathan Group which is, in turn, controlled by Japanese drinks giant Kirin. The compelling and somewhat unconventional winery was built in 1972, resembling an early version of an air traffic control tower. Young senior winemaker Ben Haines seems to be adeptly modernising the approach to the wines while preserving the estate’s essence.Importer: Lion Nathan Group
