Here's a souped-up, full-bodied wine from northeast Italy. The Pasqua 2015 Amarone della Valpolicella Mai Dire Mai has savory aromas of road tar, charred spice, baked terracotta, blackberry syrup and dried currant. This is another super-sized red blend made with air-dried fruit in a warm and very sunny vintage. The alcohol content is an overblown 16.5%. Only 8,000 bottles were released.

A sleek, medium- to full-bodied red, with a zesty underpinning to flavors of baked black cherry, date, cured tobacco and Asian five-spice. The flavor range is tightly knit to the firm, sculpted tannins; decant or try some short-term cellaring here. The Pasqua 2012 Amarone della Valpolicella Mai Dire Mai (with 8,000 bottles made) is 65% Corvina, 15% Corvinone, 10% Rondinella and 10% Oseleta from a vineyard with basalt and calcareous soils. Showing some tertiary evolution, the wine is savory and spicy with thick grains of texture and easy tannins. The overall effect of this wine is fleshy and soft.

Pasqua's newest wine project is the Mai Dire Mai series that sees fruit sourced from some of the estate's latest vineyard acquisitions. The full-bodied 2011 Amarone della Valpolicella Mai Dire Mai impresses for the smoothness it presents both in terms of its aromatic display and the mouthfeel. There is a seamless succession of dark fruit aromas, followed by spice, tar and black licorice. The fruit sees four months of appassimento. These are impressive results.

Dark, savory and brooding, the 2010 Amarone della Valpolicella Mai Dire Mai is a broad-shouldered and well-constructed red wine from Northeast Italy. The wine shows a fine sense of textural embroidery with seamless integration and full force power at 16.5% alcohol. Dark fruit aromas segue to spice, cured meat and tobacco. This hearty Amarone sees two years in oak.
