Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2008 Calcare Cabernet Sauvignon is profoundly scented of black currant cordial, eucalypt, cinnamon and nutmeg with a touch of vanilla pod. Full and voluptuous on the palate, it has firm fine tannins, high acidity and a long spicy finish. Drinking now, it should cellar well to 2018. Established in 1991, Pepper Tree produces about 50,000 cases out of the Hunter Valley, Coonawarra, Wrattonbully and Orange. Their much praised young chief winemaker Jim Chatto joined in 2007, bringing with him a fresh eye. These new releases demonstrate his talented touch as well as offering very good value, with all except the Strandlines Cabernet Shiraz priced at around AU$35 or below. No known USA importer.
