Pinot Blanc is a variety with which Pfaffl has shown consistent success (the 2003, for example, was glorious), and his 2004 Weissburgunder, with its nearly Riesling-like lime/citrus-like fruit, and its brothy, chalky, creamy palate with hints of salted hazelnuts, is a fine success. It finishes with a verve and phenolic grip (though some might call this “a bit of roughness”) that I would not associate with this variety outside of Austria.
