This is red-fruited with ground spices, cedar and nut shell on offer. Some chocolate, too. Medium-bodied, soft and velvety with ripe cherries and mulberries and chalky texture in the finish. Drink or hold.

The Podere la Cappella 2019 Chianti Classico sees a tiny part of Merlot blended into this Sangiovese-based wine. It offers easy ripeness with fruit-forward flavors of wild cherry, raspberry and dark cassis. There is a hint of sweet almond or nuttiness on the close, with nice freshness to follow. Fruit comes from a 4.5-hectare parcel with relatively young 15-year-old vines. Some 15,000 bottles were released.

The Podere la Cappella 2017 Chianti Classico is simple and bright with tart cherry and blueberry followed by soft spice and campfire ash. This is a very clean and highly composed Sangiovese with silky tannins and a lovely softness to the finish. This wine deftly plays down the extra heat and concentration of the vintage. This is a great under-the-radar discovery and offered at a reasonable price.
