The folks at Poggio al Tesoro really have nabbed a successful approach when it comes to the versatile Vermentino grape. The 2021 Bolgheri Vermentino Solosole opens to a luminous appearance and golden highlights. The bouquet produces nectarine, passion fruit, pomelo and a glossy or waxy element that adds a bit of the proverbial shine. It only sees stainless steel, and the grapes come from a vineyard planted just above the level of the sea. An ample 100,000 bottles were made and each one offers terrific value.

I'm a huge fan of refreshing Vermentino from Coastal Tuscany, and some of the very best expressions are brought to us by the talented winemaking team at Poggio al Tesoro. The 2019 Bolgheri Vermentino Solosole is just the ticket for your beach picnic or your boat tour of the coast. This Vermentino opens to tangy and crisp aromas with citrus, white peach and spicy saffron. Dig a little deeper and you get salty mineral notes and a touch of wild sage. This wine is elaborate and textured, with creamy lean-bodied appeal. The best part is the terrific value you get out of this 90,000-bottle release.

This is absolutely one of my favorite Vermentino wines from the Tuscan Coast. It is made by Marilisa Allegrini and her consulting enologist Luca D'Attoma. You get so much freshness and varietal purity in the 2018 Bolgheri Vermentino Solosole, with lemongrass, grapefruit and green tropical fruit like papaya and mango. The aromas are expertly delineated and crystalline. Some 88,000 bottles were made, and the value is unbeatable.

To make the 2017 Bolgheri Vermentino Solosole, Poggio al Tesoro sourced Vermentino clones from Corsica, rather than Tuscany. The clone has large, loose clusters that require a lot of extra work in order to manage yields; the vineyard teams do a lot of fruit selection, sometimes berry for berry. This wine is made in stainless steel. They had experimented with oak but that was abandoned. It is fermented at very low temperatures and aged on the lees. The first vintage of this popular white wine was 2006.

The 2016 Bolgheri Vermentino Solosole is a beautiful expression of this Tuscan grape with far more texture and richness than you usually get. The wine opens to a very pale golden color and a crystalline appearance.The finish is ripe with white peach, pear and loads of fragrant honey. There is just enough acidity on the close to keep the package tight and bright.
