The Ariane, a selection of the finest parcels, is aged in oak and bottle for several years prior to release. The 1998, a blend of equal parts Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, and Syrah, offers a kinky, provocative aromatic display of tree bark, barbecue spices, and seaweed (nori). Perhaps it’s a vintage character, but it does not reveal the richness or intensity of the 2000 and 2001. Nevertheless, it is a fine effort with good purity, outstanding balance, and lovely flavors that unfold incrementally on the palate. Drink it over the next 5-8 years.
Jordi Rotllan Torra was one of the pioneers of Priorat having founded this small estate in 1984, long before this now fashionable wine region became world renowned.
