The region of Friuli Venezia Giulia is showing some very promising results with the Pinot Bianco grape, also widely planted in Alto Adige. With some 6,000 bottles made, the Scubla 2018 Friuli Colli Orientali Pinot Bianco is linear and bright with pear, apple and crushed stone or salty mineral. That saline note reinforces the dryness and the delineated elegance of the mouthfeel. This well-priced wine would make a fantastic match to a raw shellfish starter or sushi.

The 2012 Friuli Colli Orientali Pinot Bianco is my favorite wine from this producer. I love the energy and balance of the mouth-feel that is played forward thanks to stone fruit, preserved lemon, Golden Delicious apple and yellow rose. The natural thickness and creaminess of the wine is very pleasing. Its bold density would pair with spicy Moroccan or Tunisian chicken dishes. Drink: 2014-2016.
