Crushed rocks, pears, white peaches and hints of earthiness are some of the nuances that emerge from Scubla’s 2010 Friulano. There is an understated, weightless expression to the fruit here that I find especially striking. The 2009 Friulano shows lovely textural richness and depth. Varietal notes aren’t quite as prominent as they usually are in the Friulano, but the balance and sense of harmoniousness are beyond reproach. I was very impressed with Scubla’s 2007 Friulano. Made in a mineral-driven, focused style, it reveals excellent persistence and balance. Notes of white peaches intermingled with flowers and herbs emerge as this pure, gorgeous wine opens in the glass. Friulano is the new name for the Tocai grape. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2010. The 2006 Tocai Friulano exhibits a distinctly Friulian austerity at the outset although it opens up a little on the mid-palate. Built on a nervous, sinewy frame, it reveals citrus, minerals and menthol, with notable vibrancy on the palate that carries through to the long finish. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2009.
