The 2021 Suckfizzle Cabernet Sauvignon is lightly framed, spicy and supple. There's a green inflection through the background, with leaf and brine, cassis and raspberry. The wine is light and red fruited, with red licorice, raspberry and apple. Perhaps that is reflective of the growing season, which was generally pretty wet, or at least constantly raining, without being too cold. It was a challenge. However, there have been some lovely wines made in this year, and this is one of them. I bet that it ages gracefully. 13.8% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

The Suckfizzle Vineyard is right down in Karridale, and for those who have driven down there, you'll know that it's a far drive from Margaret River town. The temperatures are usually lower down here, and the rainfall a little higher—altogether a great area for wines of focus, acid and intensity. So, the 2020 Suckfizzle Cabernet Sauvignon hails from a warm season—low yielding and dry to boot—the combination with the growing area gives a subtle contrast in the mouth. Succulent raspberry, nori/dried kelp, tobacco leaf and brine. There are layers of exotic spice, to the tune of star anise and toasted fennel seeds. There's also the endemic saltbush and licorice caught up in the fray. You also get clarity of acid and concentration of fruit and tannin. It's a super wine, with chewy tannins perfectly structured and loads of flavor and density, while retaining a levity and spaciousness that insist on further drinking. Good plus. 14.3% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

"Concentration" and "precision" are the key words here. The fruit for the 2019 Suckfizzle Cabernet Sauvignon is from a (very) southerly vineyard, which is a famously cool site. The wine then, from a cool year, shows a minty, herbal and graphite character that is so beguiling and good. In fact, the perfume is so interwoven into the fruit that it's hard to know where one ends and the other begins. A precise wine. A beauty.

It's no surprise that the 2018 Suckfizzle Cabernet Sauvignon (from a warm year) is this winery's best-ever Cabernet. Yes, it's full-bodied, plush and velvety, but it has also retained terrifically detailed nuances of violets, herbal tea, red raspberries and black currants. A fabulous effort, it ends long, in a wash of gently dusty tannins. Drink now - 2035.

The 2017 Suckfizzle Cabernet Sauvignon offers up notes of sage and bay leaf, plus cassis and chocolate. It's medium to full-bodied and admirably silky in texture, with plenty of length and richness on the finish.
