Of the wines in this important portfolio from Etna, this one is often the softest and the most sensual. The Tenuta delle Terre Nere 2020 Etna Rosso Santo Spirito delivers a very fine and nuanced fruit profile with a fluttering of wild berry and rose. The mouthfeel is lean and delicate, and the tannins are supple. Santo Spirito can be seen in three parts: the high part, middle part and lower parcel. The middle part is the least interesting because an old stream flooded there and changed the soils. Marc De Grazia uses the lower part for red wines and the upper part for whites.

The 2016 Etna Rosso Santo Spirito (98% Nerello Mascalese and 2% Nerello Cappuccio) shows a slightly more open and accessible style with purple fruit, wild berry, spice and grilled herb. You feel the warmth of the vintage and the even ripeness of the fruit. Yet, make no mistake, the wine is profoundly Burgundian in character, with delicate traces of dark mineral and ash woven throughout the wine's fine texture. The wine is graceful and almost fragile in disposition. Some 7,000 bottles were made.

The 2014 Etna Rosso Santo Spirito is an absolute standout wine that shows the generosity and the elegant depth of the vintage. The bouquet is profound and thickly layered with wild fruit, forest floor, crushed mineral, sweet licorice, dried apricot and grilled herb. The wine's color is dark and saturated with brilliant ruby highlights. The wine offers even more energy and importance in terms of mouthfeel. It is truly memorable. Marco De Grazia has made some of the finest and most exciting wines I have yet to taste from mighty Etna.

The 2013 Etna Rosso Santo Spirito is an abundant and enriched expression from the darkened volcanic slopes of Mt. Etna Santo Spirito runs through parts of Passopisciaro at the heart of Etna's best production zones. This gorgeous wine opens to a dark garnet appearance with inkier colors of crimson and ruby. Crisp and crunchy tones of wild berry, cranberry, red rose and dark mineral characterize the mouthfeel. This was a difficult vintage that saw slow and uneven ripening for many producers. Marco De Grazia has evidently mastered when to harvest his fruit at optimal ripeness.

The 2011 Etna Rosso Santo Spirito is slightly softer and more expansive when compared to the other single-vineyard expressions from this estate. Tannins have been incredibly well-managed and integrated within the bolder, darker quality of fruit on display. The 2011 vintage presents upfront and accessible characteristics that bode well for medium-term consumption. Drink 2016-2028. Marco de Grazia-s influence on the wines of Etna looms as large as the massive volcano that dominates the landscape in this very special corner of Sicily. This bi-cultural Italian and American figure (with extensive influence in the wine world as an importer, producer and great connoisseur of Barolo and Barbaresco) has pretty much moved permanently to live on Etna. His daughter is enrolled in the local school and his winery is a happy meeting ground for many younger Etna winemakers who seek Marco-s advice and counsel. I have often observed how the newest generations of winemakers - the so-called -Etna Boys- - refer to Marco in paternal tones.
