Larry Schaffer's Viognier tends to take some time to open up, and I found the 2015 Viognier White Hawk Vineyard (which is still some way away from release) quite tight-knit and hard to read. With coaxing, it offered up pretty notes of white peach, petrol, spice and honey, followed by a medium-bodied, glossy palate, but I suspect more is held in reserve.

The 2014 Viognier White Hawk Vineyard is quite a restrained, soil-driven expression of Viognier, offering up notes of toasted nuts, white peach and almond cream, followed by a glossy but crisp, medium-bodied palate buttressed by refreshing acids.

Also fresh, lively and quaffable, the 2012 Viognier (incorporates 5% Roussanne) has ripe golden fruits, caramelized citrus and hints of marzipan to go with a medium-bodied, clean and refreshing feel on the palate. Aged 10 months in neutral French oak, it’s another delicious white to drink over the coming year or so. I was slightly disappointed in these new releases by winemaker Larry Schaffer. The 2011 Viognier White Hawk Vineyard (from barrel) is a pretty wine with lovely textural finesse and plenty of varietal character. White floral notes wrap around the expressive finish.
