Readers searching an Aglianico that won't break the bank will want to check out Terredora's 2009 Aglianico. There is plenty of varietal character in the dark wild cherries, underbrush, tobacco, tar, spices and cured meats. The tannins dry out a bit on the finish, but that is a relatively small criticism for a wine at this level. Three months in oak add body without marking the wine. This is a gorgeous wine, especially for the money. It will show at its best if given some aeration in advance. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. Terredora Di Paolo is one of the leading estates in Campania. This is a superb set of releases, with many excellent choices at all price ranges. The estate’s 2008 Aglianico is a gem of a wine. Wild cherries, dark raspberries, spices, leather and licorice come together beautifully in this medium-bodied red. Floral notes waft out from the glass on the finish. There is nothing fussy here, just a flat out delicious bottle of unoaked Aglianico readers are sure to enjoy. Even better, this is a terrific value. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2014. These new releases from Terredora are among the most impressive I tasted. From top to bottom these are serious wines readers will not want to miss.
