The 2001 Merlot “Estate Selection” is pure Merlot and announces its self-reliance on entering the palate with meaty, marrowy richness, firm tannins, medium to full body, and an abundance of ripe tomato, beet root, and black cherry fruit. The grilled tomato and meat aspects of the wine dominate in the aroma. The finish builds satisfyingly with iodine, black fruit, meat, and sweet herbal notes. Lenz draws comparisons with a 1995 Merlot which – among several older vintages I had the privilege to taste on this occasion – was especially minerally, deep, and vibrant with remarkably youthful fruit.
