A gently evolved expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, the Valentino Butussi 2016 Friuli Colli Orientali Rosso Riserva Santuari opens to an inky black appearance with a deep and penetrating bouquet. The wine is packed with brooding black fruit, mahogany, barbecue smoke and campfire ash. The oak nuances are present for sure but they don't completely overwhelm the fruit. The tannins are a bit bitter and astringent, and I'm not sure they will soften much more than this, so your best bet is to serve it with some braised beef. I tasted number 474 of 2,200 bottles produced.
