Richter’s 2005 Muhlheimer Helenenkloster Riesling Beerenauslese represents a real rarity in that the grapes from this site are normally left for Eiswein. High-toned pear and apricot aromas with a shadowy hint of caramelization lead to a viscous concentration of spiced pear and apricot nectar laced with honey on the palate. This makes its impressive statement – at least for now – on sheer intensity, purity, and refinement of finish. When its youthful sweetness has backed off (which might take significantly longer than a decade) and it has time to show more complexity, I expect it will be much more impressive than today. Certainly 30 years are unlikely to bring it to the point of old age. (Since sadly few people will be able to afford Richter’s rare B.A.s and T.B.A.s at all, I have listed their prices for 375 ml. format, although they were also bottled in 750 ml.)
