Most of the Zinfandel vineyard is relatively young, but you would never know that from tasting the 1988. It enjoys a deep ruby/purple color, a big, briery, spicy, peppery, mineral-scented nose, medium to full body, gobs of clean berry fruit, and a crisp, moderately tannic finish. Based on previous examples I tasted, such as the 1987 and 1986, the tannins appear less elevated, making the wine more supple and flattering to drink. It should continue to offer delicious drinking for 6-8 years. It is a shame only 2,000 cases of this Howell Mountain Zinfandel are produced because it deserves more attention than it receives.
