There will be magnums as well as 750 ml bottles produced of the 1995 Marcassin Vineyard Pinot Noir. There is only one barrel of the wine (roughly 25 cases of each). Allocation by lottery may resolve the distribution problem for those customers on the winery's mailing list. The 1995 Pinot Noir Marcassin Vineyard is the debut vintage for this wine. It possesses one of the most enthralling and exquisite Burgundian-like Pinot noses I have ever smelled in a young American Pinot Noir. The color is a healthy medium dark ruby, and the sweet nose of jammy red and black fruits, truffles, smoked duck, and earth reminded this taster of a grand cru from Flagey-Echezeaux or Vosne-Romanee. The wine reveals a delicacy and sweetness on the palate, without the weight one expects from such intense aromas and flavors. A remarkably complex wine, it will be a dazzling, full-bodied, perfumed style of Pinot Noir that should drink well during its first 5-7 years of life. I doubt it will be long-lived, but all the Marcassin wines have held their fruit and character longer than I would have expected. Tel. (707) 258-3608; Fax (707) 942-5633
