The 2001 Sanpetrolo is a full-bodied, luscious sweet wine with a whopping 432(!) grams of residual sugar, far in excess of the level allowed for Vin Santo, hence its IGT designation. No matter, the wine is fabulous from start to finish. Rich molasses, toffee, espresso, cloves and vanilla bean flow from this rich, unctuous dessert wine. The balance of richness and freshness is remarkable, especially on the focused, beautifully articulated finish. To be sure, it is hard to drink more than a small glass of this at one sitting, but on its own, it is superb. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.
Proprietor Luca Sanjust and his team make some of the most sensual, pleasurable wines in Tuscany. Always intellectually curious, Sanjust continues to push the envelope, most recently with his 2001 sweet wine, essentially a Vin Santo that can’t be labeled as such since its residual sugar is far above the legally accepted limits.
