The 2001 Tancredi, Nero d’Avola and Cabernet Sauvignon, is dark in color, ripe and spicy on the nose, and both weighty and long on the palate. The tannins on the close add to the grip and authority and suggest that the wine will drink well until 2012.
Owned by a branch of the Rallo family, an historic name in Marsala, Donnafugata, with more than 650 acres of vineyards, has long been a major force in Sicily. The last eighteen months have also seen a dramatic increase in quality, and these are wines which now compete with the best of Italy’s south.
