Fontodi's 2000 Chianti Classico, while no match for the brilliant 1999 reviewed last year (rated 91, $26 a bottle), is one of the finest 2000s I have tasted. Its dense ruby color is accompanied by complex aromas of damp earth, truffles, leather, black cherries, strawberries, and figs. Medium-bodied and muscular, with fine density, and a monolithic, ripe character, it can be drunk now and over the next 6-7 years.
